Exterior paint is a system, not a colour.
The colour matters. But what makes an exterior repaint last in Brisbane is the system underneath: the prep, the primer, the chemistry between the substrate and the topcoat.
We don't run a generic exterior service. We assess every job for substrate (timber, render, Hardie, brick, metal), exposure (north-facing baking sun vs south-facing dampness), and condition (peeling, chalking, mould). Then we spec a system that matches.
What we spec, and why.
- Weatherboard / timber cladding: Dulux Weathershield over a Dulux 1-Step prep & prime. Two coats. Brushed and back-rolled into the grain.
- Hardie / fibre cement: Same Weathershield topcoat, alkali-resistant primer underneath to handle the calcium leach from the substrate.
- Render: Stretches more than people think. We prime with an elastomeric primer and run a low-sheen topcoat that flexes with the wall.
- Brick: Acrylic or breathable mineral paint, depending on the wall's history. Always cleaned and stabilised first.
- Metal (Colorbond, gutters, downpipes): Etch primer + acrylic enamel topcoat. We rarely recommend painting new Colorbond (warranty), but it's great for aged surfaces.

Brisbane-specific reality.
A few things we run into more than painters in cooler climates:
- Mould on south-facing walls: every wash starts with a mould-killer pass. Anti-microbial additives in the primer if the wall has a history.
- UV on north and west elevations: we step up to a UV-resistant tint base, especially for darker colours.
- River-and-airport-side suburbs: Hamilton, Ascot, Northgate. We use chloride-resistant metal primers and rinse-down more often.
- Storm season: we don't start an exterior job in storm season without a contingency window built in. Wet paint and squalls are not friends.
When to do it.
Best months for exterior in Brisbane are April–October: drier, cooler nights, more predictable working windows. We can paint year-round, but quote slips by a week or two if we're working around storm forecasts.
